i mean, quite frankly, i'm mystified by the mitt romney we saw at the debate and the mitt romney who is now saying that he was completely wrong about trashing 47% of the country. how is it possible that a man who has been running for president for six years is having these personality conversions all within the span of a few days or a few hours. >> that's a very good question, john. i wish i could answer that. michelle, what is romney actually saying he was wrong about? that he got the number wrong? that it's actually 46% of people that he believes are entitled to health care, food, housing, you name it? what exactly is he saying was wrong? >> well, we don't actually know because he was very smart. he picked a friendly interviewer who is not going to push him too hard on exactly what he was wrong about. was he wrong to say it, wrong to get caught saying it, was he wrong to think it? these are not things that shean hannity and the fox team are going to push him on, but what he is right about is that he can't let that sit out there, and he picked a time when he thought he had a relativ

he accused mitt romney of not being the real mitt romney on wednesday night during that debate saying he appeared to be more moderate, walked back some of his initial positions. mr. obama said his health care plan would cover pre-existing condition, that's a claim that the campaign walked about. today mr. obama said romney had been fact-checked by his own campaign. took a slight at that. trying to rally support in ohio where early voting has already started. this is a key battleground state, tamron. >> thank you, kristen. more on the breaking news. the new jobs numbers. in a statement john boehner said while there's positive news in today's report, job creation is far too slow and the unemployment rate is far too high. senate majority leader harry reid said with unemployment dropping below 8% to the lowest level in four years, our economy is on the right track. joining me now is "newsweek" columnist zachary caribel. we have one more jobs report left and let's move aahead and not talk about the ground game regarding the numbers we've seen. let's talk about the numbers we haven't seen c

will these new numbers mean lights out for romney's post debate afterglow? new ads kat aare catered to cri inting states. joining me live is jan schakowsky. congresswoman, it's great to have you here. business pioneer jack welch basically calls these numbers into question. had this remark that he tweeted out earlier today saying, unbelievable jobs numbers. these chicago guys will do anything, can't debate, so change numbers. what do you say to that? even the white house though right now this morning reluctant to spike the football on this. in their statement saying it is critical we continue the policies that are building an economy that works for the middle cla class as we dig our way out of a deep hole. what is your response to those questioning the validity? >> that's really interesting because i happened to see one of those chicago guys last night. i was with david axelrod. i asked him what do you expect about the jobs numbers? he says, i really don't know. we're hoping it will be good. so, you know, it doesn't surprise me that romney supporters are now

give us your take on this economic debate. >> it's clearly the new fake romney on the debate and president obama couldn't adjust in time. he said what's this? and i think it's the old romney that counts. i think the 47% really reflected his plutocratic personality, and he still has tattend to his bas, which is the primary base. that's what's going to bring him down. >> that's the political reality. there is a reality that there are people out there who want to know what these guys are going to do going forward. they're not economists. what is the conversation that's not being had, ralph, that you think needs to be heard? >> this is a corporate dominated economy. i mean, corporations decide where the capital is going to go, where it's going to be invested, who is going to be hired. general electric decides to export more jobs than they build in this country. they do. they decide not to pay taxes and get benefit back from the treasury. they do. and these presidents, they're held responsible for the whole economy even though they're not the czar. this isn't a command and controlled socialist

have a couple more good debates, those all go in the romney column. that was a freudian slip. but at the end of the day, though, the question is committee make up the big difference in ohio? can he make up the big difference in wisconsin? because if he doesn't win ohio, he's got to win wisconsin. the romney people still think he can. after that debate and after barack obama's performance, which was staggeringly bad. >> all right. >> no, i mean it. >> he's right. >> okay. >> i'm hearing this from democrats. and this broke through. we always hear about how americans aren't paying attention. they're looking at reality shows. this broke through, everybody was talking about it, not just how well romney did but how badly the president performed. >> well, just as i think it was premature to declare the race over before, i think it's too soon to say that that performance, as widely watched as it was, is going to move numbers. we have yet to see any numbers move. i think they probably will some. and i think that on the other hand, did governor romney win the d

when mitt romney beat president obama in last night's televised debate. so the first televised presidential debate that we had was in 1960. here are all of the other years that we have since have televised presidential debates. every four years now we have these debates on tv. the only years, though, so these are all the years, right, right? the only years, though, in which you had an incumbent president running against a challenger in all of the years we've had presidential debates on tv are these years. so in terms of understanding the historical context of what happened last night when mitt romney beat president obama in this first debate, this is the universe of like things to compare it to. this is how to understand it in terms of american political history. it's only these years right here. that's it. now, by definition, you never have an incumbent president in this situation more than once. presidents can only serve two terms so there's only one opportunity when they carry into that debate, when they're running for re-election, they carry into that
